How did you get into floral design?
My mother was an award winning floral designer (and also had a catering business), so I grew up watching her. I took the career path of education, and I was a classroom teacher for many years. When a friend asked me to design her daughter’s wedding flowers, I jumped right in (although truly I had never designed flowers on my own). That was a success and then others began asking me to design flowers. For a while I worked from my garage, then from a wholesaler flower importer’s space... then it was time to rent a commercial space!
Explain your process of working with a bride.
I do like to meet with brides here at my workshop...I have a nice meeting room area. We discuss options, look at my portfolio, their photos of course they have from Pinterest! I have a showroom (or two) of containers, so that we can actually put them on the table and do a “mock up” of different looks, etc.
What is your favorite flower?
Peony
What makes you different from other florists?
I am really not sure what other florists do...however one advantage I have is my very large inventory of containers and props. I do not have a minimum, in fact on my occasions we have just designed a single bride bouquet, if that is all a bride needs.
What is one thing you love to hear in consultation with a bride?
I love to hear that she trusts me to actually DESIGN something unique for her..and not just copy from Pinterest!
