Planner Profile: Locklane Weddings & Events
Today we are spotlighting our member Locklane Weddings & Events! This planning company was founded in 2014 by Megan Scurlock.
My company started under the classic story - my wedding was stressful, it fell apart, but my coordinator saved it at the last minute and I realized the value of planners. I want my clients to have the opposite story. I want to create a smooth, stress-free day that is planned down to the last detail. I want it to be exceptionally personal. My clients’ weddings are more than Pinterest perfect, it’s story written just for you.
What is your trademark or super power?
I get overly excited about the details. I really and truly care that you are choosing to wear your mom’s veil or your grandfather’s pocket watch, and I will write it all down on my list. I really like lists! Everything will be organized and annotated so that (hopefully!) nothing is overlooked on your wedding day.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love getting to walk my clients through from start to finish and really getting to know them. Creating a connection is so important to helping me ensure their wedding day fully represents who they are as a couple. And when I can follow their story after the wedding, then I know we’ve created a friendship and a trust because I helped design and execute one of the most memorable days of their life.
What inspired you to enter the event industry?
I was a DIY bride with a tiny budget, but I stretched it as far as I could! Our caterer offered to also do our linen rental. Since it was so discounted, we thought it was a great solution and they could take the linens at clean up…. Well… Long story short, it was a classic “Stay in your lane” situation.
The caterer ordered linens online that were damaged and overall poor quality. I was so upset, as we set up the night before, to find holes in over half of the linens, but didn’t realize there was a solution. A friend was trying to launch her planning business and was coordinating for me; she saw what happened the next morning and swooped in like a superhero. She picked up beautiful rentals from a local company and had the caterer cover the replacement cost. She alleviated a huge stressor that I knew would ruin the vision of the entire wedding and she barely batted an eye. After that, I wanted to be a superhero. And through my own planning process, I learned how much a trusted planner is worth and how much they are needed. I was SO clueless!
I worked for my friend for three years before starting my company. I learned how to guide my clients to the best vendors, how to make their vision come to life, within a budget, and remove the stress on their day.
Who is your dream client?
When I’m interviewing clients, I tell them that my goal is for guests to walk into the reception and see the couple represented in every detail they choose. I want them to really embrace a day that is all about them. To me, your wedding should stretch beyond trends and the latest fashion, those can be included, but as you celebrate your love, you should also celebrate who you are as a couple and as individuals.
Our events are personal, meaningful, and timeless.
What are the first steps you take with new clients?
The first step is to get to know each other! I have an extensive questionnaire that really pulls to mind all of your favorite things, then we talk through them and see what is important to include on the wedding day. I not only want to know what to include but also the why behind it.
Where do you find inspiration?
I love to find inspiration in everyday life. For my clients, that means looking at their favorite restaurants and pulling ideas for their reception appetizers or dinner. Their favorite colors can influence the color scheme. If their home is mid-century modern, maybe we find a venue with a similar vibe.
I’m also constantly reading magazines, following national brands on social media, reading blogs, and even looking to past, classic events or books. The past often repeats itself, but let’s do it with style!
How do you stay up-to-date with the event industry?
Through all of the ways that I find my inspiration - social media (mostly Instagram and Clubhouse), magazines, blogs. And also through my vendor and planner friends - we often learn from and encourage each other.
What is one of the biggest or most important lessons you've learned since becoming an entrepreneur?
Be prepared to pivot. That may be in finding new staff, that may be in the middle of an event, it may be in finding a new angle for your business. But at all times, being prepared to redirect and find a better or new solution is important. And often, we can learn from those around us! So also be prepared to look to your peers and competitors for advice.
On my days off you can find me…
Hanging out with my husband and girls! We may be curled up watching a movie, off exploring a new city, shopping in Downtown Franklin, or sitting by the ocean
I’m dying to take a trip to…
The Highlands. We’ve been planning to return to the Scottish Highlands for two years…. Covid keeps disrupting those plans.
If you owned a restaurant, what food would it serve?
Tex-Mex. I miss it so much! Handmade tortillas, all the queso, fresh guacamole… Mmm yes, please.
